Here's a Viper for your time. The feels are below.

Kinja'd!!!

So, a bunch of my friends/co-workers are out in town tonight drinking. I was invited and was originally planning to go along. However, as night fell, I began to have second thoughts. Probably half an hour ago, one of them called and asked where I was, claiming they'd been telling stories about me to girls and what not. When I answered the phone, I sounded a little groggy, like I'd just woken up. He told them I had been asleep and was still in my room. To my annoyance, I heard the classic "Oooooh!" sort of call you'd expect from a bunch of guys drinking towards the end of happy hour. I replied "Yeah, don't care. Fuck you guys." and hung up.

I feel like I'm in the wrong for not going out with them and how I acted when they asked where I was. The truth is though, I find alcohol to be incredibly overrated. I like the occasional Sam Adam's or Corona, but that's it. I don't drink just for the sake of drinking and I like keeping money in my wallet. I also hate -HATE- that sort of social environment. Parties, bars- I don't see the "fun" in them. They're just incredibly awkward for me.

Sorry that was kind of long, I just had to try and get this feeling of guilt out of my head.

And yes, I see the irony of the beer advertisement in the picture.

No need to feel guilty. And for what it's worth I have the same opinion of alcohol/bars/parties. I only end up drinking about once or twice a year for special occasions.

I've decided I'm only going to drink when I'm with my family on vacation. It's a different atmosphere then.

No need to feel guilty. Despite what social conventions dictate, you're not forced to do stuff you don't like just because other people are doing it or feel about not doing it. I don't like going out to bars and clubs either, it's just not my thing, and I couldn't give less of a damn to what other people think :)

Nope, you're good in this situation.

1) Youre upholding both you values and earnings.

2) You dont like the atmosphere, so you didnt go. Thats nothing to be ashamed of.

When I was in school, all of my best friends were always party animals. They'd get totally trashed, and drop tons of money on it. I had one rule with them. Not around me. I wont give people rides to liqour stores, to get cigarettes, dont drunk dial me, and I will not pick you up or bail you out. If they like me and value my friendship, they can respect that. In return, they get an equal amount of respect in return. I have lost relationships over it, but knowing what I do now, at least I am better off now.

Theres no reason for you to feel bad about it. Its who you are, and they need to respect you. They can do whatever they want, and that doesnt change a thing. As long as you all respect each other, life is good. It sounds like they dont want you to feel left out, which is nice of them, so its not to be discounted, but if its not right for you, thats okay. Just be yourself. Theres nothing to regret about being yourself.

I have just one white russian and my drinking's done for the night. It's a tasty drink and the alcohol, while still there, is diluted depending on the amount of milk poured in.
Aside from that, I'm not much of a drinker. If I know I'm not driving, sure I'll take a swig or two, but I have a ton of food to my side while doing so.

Maybe offer to be the sober driver next time, assuming you can enjoy yourself. Even if you aren't comfortable in those environments, honestly, it's a life skill that would be good to learn. I feel awkward in those environments, too (especially if I only know one person there), but connections often help you get to where you want to go in life, and those places are often where these connections are made (or made stronger).

I spent a deployment in Afghanistan with these people. The connection doesn't get much stronger than that.

Gotcha. Not worried about your current group of friends, in particular - just about getting more comfortable in those environments in general.

I'm with you, though. I'd much rather be outside, hanging out and drinking a beer with friends, than in a loud, crowded, bar or club.
